Last week we took a hard hat tour of the new South Congress Hotel in Austin, which is expected to open the second week of September 2015. It will be a boutique hotel with 83 rooms…12 of which are suites. It is a very short distance from popular Austin sights like the Texas Capitol, the South Congress bats and downtown. Even though it’s not furnished yet, it’s easy to see that this will be a favorite for locals and tourists alike. It’s a very welcoming spot and you don’t have to be a guest to try some of the great things is has to offer.
It has a modern 50’s feel to it with subtle brass details throughout and wood and steel being a big part of the theme. There are 9 different room types. My favorite feature (and the soon-to-be favorite feature of future ACL/SXSW attendees and bachelor/bachelorette parties) is sure to be the room that features 2 queen size bunk beds! Yes, you read that right. 2 bunk beds. Meaning a total of 8 people can fit into 1 room! The rest of the rooms will feature a king size bed.
The hotel doesn’t look very big from outside but once you get in the front door there is a lot to explore. There will be 3 places to eat…
- Café No Sé (that’s Spanish for “I don’t know”) – a continental all day café serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Central Standard – their American bar and grill featuring a wrap around patio serving lunch, brunch and dinner.
- Otoko – the highly anticipated Japanese restaurant by Executive Chef Paul Qui.
The rooftop pool is sure to be a popular place for the guests of the hotel. It overlooks the shops and restaurants that line the busy street of South Congress and you can’t beat the view of the Austin Skyline. The pool also features a nice bar with poolside dining provided by Café No Sé.
Now that we’ve covered the fun stuff, let’s get down to business! The hotel has 2,300 square feet of indoor meeting space and 2,400 square feet of landscaped courtyards, gardens and pre-function space. This will be a great spot for meetings, weddings…or any type of event really. There are floor to ceiling windows in the banquet space which help give it a very open feel. The room can hold up to 200 people using the indoor space but add the outside courtyard and you’ve got an event set-up for 500 people! Who wouldn’t want to attend an event in such a great new location with tons of things to see and do on your free time?!
Whether you’re a guest at the hotel, attending an event or a local looking to try a new spot, South Congress Hotel is going to be the place to go! We can’t wait for the day this hotel opens.
