Music Festival Season Is Upon Us

May 11, 2016

Snow has melted and sunshine is beaming down on our faces, which means one very important thing for us live music enthusiasts: festival season is upon us!

Austin City Limits Music Festival 2014, ACL Festival

After much anticipation for us Austinites (among many others), the Austin City Limits Music Festival has officially released the full two-weekend lineup for 2016. This has been one of the last major music festivals in the United States patrons have been on their toes about, in terms of which artists will be present at their festival of choice. Among headliners for the late September/early October shows include Radiohead, Mumford & Sons, and Kendrick Lamar.

A recent trend we’ve seen the past few years is artists headlining and/or performing at multiple festivals the same year. Let’s take Mumford & Sons for example. This summer, the band can be seen at BBC Radio 1s Big Weekend, Firefly, Hurricane Festival, Bravalla Music Festival, Open Air St. Gallen, British Summer Time and Austin City Limits Music Festival. Radiohead has the upper hand on number of music festivals of these 3 performers with 10 (Primavera Sound, Secret Solstice, Open Air St. Gallen, NOS Alive, Osheaga, Lollapalooza Chicago, Outside Lands, Summer Sonic, Lollapalooza Berlin and Austin City Limits Music Festival). Notice a pattern? Some of these bands will have more opportunity to get to know each other when touring at the same stops in 2016. To wrap up ACL’s headliners, let’s also look at Kendrick Lamar’s summer festival stops while on tour: Essence Music Festival, British Summer Time, FIB, Longitude Festival, Panorama, FYF and Austin City Limits Music Festival (Note: many of these festivals will also host LCD Soundsystem, who some are calling the “fourth headliner” of Austin City Limits Music Festival).

If you follow the trend over the past decade or so, the most popular and currently trending artists are squeezing in more festivals than ever before. This comes naturally with the recent BOOM in music festivals developing not only in the United States, but also around the world. With the capabilities to encompass either one genre or multiple, companies such as C3 presents, Live Nation, Red Frog Events and Founders Entertainment (just to name a few) appear to have demand at their fingertips in order to put on one hell of a show (or many). Being a country music fan myself, it’s great to see classics like Willie Nelson, or walk across the park to view up-and-coming star Kacey Musgraves who we’ve noticed appeals to the millennial crowd. Looking for someone in-between? Check out Chris Stapleton – one of the hottest performing (and best live-sounding artists) out there. After many years of writing #1 hits for multiple Nashville artists, his time to physically be on the big stage as arrived.

For those in the Atlanta, GA and surrounding areas of Southeast United States, I would highly recommend checking out Shaky Knees Music Fest happening this weekend. Headlining will be Florence + The Machine, My Morning Jacket and Jane’s Addiction. Other fan favorites include Walk The Moon, Deftones, Young The Giant, At The Drive In, The Decemberists and more!
