Texas Experiences: ACL Live

April 21, 2016

Last December, each H4H Crew member was challenged to complete a fun “Texas experience.” The challenge was simple. Everyone received an experience that involved traveling to a city in Texas, completing an activity and staying at hotel. Naturally, we were all pretty excited about it. We’ll be sharing our experiences here on the blog…

Although I’ve lived in Austin, TX for over 25 years (most of my life), this town is constantly changing and is always great to experience something new – which is why I was thrilled that ‘My Texas’ experience included 2 tickets to ACL Live at the Moody Theater and spend the night at the neighboring W Austin Hotel. It wasn’t my fist time to experience the amazing Starwood property, but had never stepped foot in the connecting venue which opened it’s doors in 2011. In fact, the closest I had ever been to the old ACL Live location (located 20 blocks north on The University of Texas’ campus) was a simulcast from an amazing Dave Matthews Band performance.

In February, my wife and I took this one-day (local) getaway. Aside from having an evening away from our kiddos (which means sleeping in past 6 am!), we were excited that the band we would be seeing was Austin’s own Bob Schneider. What was also intriguing was the orchestra quartet he was adding to the show (we had never seen him perform with the additional strings and other components so this was a treat!). Did I mention it was Valentine’s Day? We are not known as the couple to partake in stereotypical Valentine’s shenanigans, but definitely made an exception this time around! The show consisted of some of his greatest hits, a few traditional love songs and a couple special guests. To say it was great would be an understatement. It was amazing.

What was also amazing is the fact that we were staying at the W Austin Hotel. This was the third time staying at the Austin property – which was plus for a few reasons:

  1. At Hotels for Hope, we have many clients that come through and take advantage of this property. Whether it be ACL Music Festival or any other occasion. To experience it first hand is always a plus when promoting the property/discussing it with clients.
  2. Not only is this one of my favorite brands, the fact that we could walk back and forth from the venue was a plus! Location, Location, Location.
  3. One of the great things about the W is the incredible job they do outside of the actual bedroom. Whether it be grabbing a drink in the Living Room Lounge, hanging out by the fireplace and browsing the thousands of records, dining at Trace Restaurant, or taking a dip in their top-notch pool area, the property draws you away from locking yourself in the actual bedroom. In fact, we are seeing this trend more and more around new hotel developments, encouraging guests to get their full money’s worth (other than just finding a place to crash for the night). Did I mention the service is outstanding too?!

Overall, our Texas experience was a great night away from our busy day-to-day lives (even if it be 8.5 miles from the house). If you have never experienced the W Austin Hotel, ACL Live at Moody Theater, or a Bob Schneider performance – “y’all” are missing out!
