Texas Experiences: Forth Worth Stockyards

May 23, 2016

Last December, each H4H Crew member was challenged to complete a fun “Texas experience.” The challenge was simple. Everyone received an experience that involved traveling to a city in Texas, completing an activity and staying at hotel. Naturally, we were all pretty excited about it. We’ll be sharing our experiences here on the blog…

Even though I am a native Texan, I have never actually been to Fort Worth, Texas. And this city girl has never seen a cattle drive either. So I was excited to learn that my Texas experience included both of these.

My friend Julie and I drove up to Fort Worth on a Saturday morning. No Texas road trip is complete without a Buc-ee’s stop, so we had to do that. From there we went straight to the Sheraton Fort Worth Downtown. This property did not disappoint. The staff was so friendly and welcoming. Our room was located on a Club Level floor (thank you, Starwood!) and had a great view of downtown Fort Worth. Since we had access to the Sheraton Club Lounge we stopped by to check it out. The views were even better than in our room!

After checking changing into our boots, we headed straight to the historic Fort Worth Stockyards ready for a truly Texas experience. I honestly didn’t know what to expect. Because it was a Saturday afternoon it was super packed. The area where the stockyards are located was pretty cool. There were lots of little shops, restaurants, a train that took visitors around and all kinds of activities. And of course, the stockyards.

We ate a quick lunch and then headed out to street where everyone lined up ready for the herd cattle drive! There were several “cowboys” and “cowgirls” helping with the crowds as we patiently waited. Then we saw them coming! There were about 12 longhorns that were in the herd. We’ve seen longhorns before (both of us attended The University of Texas at Austin) but not an actual herd of them.

The actual cattle drive was pretty short so we looked around a little bit and then headed back to explore downtown Fort Worth before our dinner reservation. We stopped at a bar near our hotel to grab a drink and in true H4H fashion, I taught my friend how to play darts. 🙂 Before long it was time for us to head back to the Sheraton and get ready for dinner.

Dinner was at the Lonesome Dove restaurant located in the historic part of Fort Worth. I’m not gonna lie, I checked out the menu before we went so I was really excited about dinner. The first two courses included a delicious shrimp appetizer followed by and even better salad. For the main course, I ordered a tenderloin and a couple sides. The steak was perfect, but it has to be noted that their truffle mac and cheese was the best mac and cheese that I’ve ever had. If you go to Lonesome Dove, be sure to order it…you won’t be disappointed.

My Texas experience was a really fun adventure. I never even knew about the Fort Worth Stockyards before my trip and I am so glad that I got to go check it out. This trip will forever be dubbed “that time the two Longhorns met real longhorns.” Thanks for a great time, Fort Worth. Until next time!
